International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

Water management

Theme pack

Dear broadcasting partners,

Food loss and waste is one of the biggest challenges facing our food systems today. Globally, about one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted, while millions of people remain hungry. In Africa, food loss happens mostly during production, storage, and transportation, limiting farmers’ income and reducing the availability of nutritious food.

To mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on September 29, we are proud to share a new theme pack focused on Food Loss and Waste. These ready-to-use resources will help you tell stories that raise awareness, share solutions, and inspire action to reduce food loss and waste across communities.

With these resources, you can highlight innovative storage and preservation methods, invite experts and farmers to discuss practical solutions, and encourage listeners to take action—whether at home, in the market, or on the farm—to reduce food loss and waste.

Thank you for your continued commitment to sharing powerful stories that uplift rural voices.
